A Checklist for Hiring a Contractor

If you are about to hire a home contractor then there are many things that you need to consider before making your final decision. This checklist will help you through the process.

Before Hiring

Even before you make the final decision on your contractor, you need to think about some important factors. You need to have a plan in advance the renovation and a budget.

Sourcing Out Builders

Part of the checklist has to focus on the hiring process. These are the steps you should go through once you are ready to hire:

  • Referrals: Ask friends, family, and neighbours if they can recommend anyone. It is better to use a contractor that someone knows and speaks highly of as they have used their services in the past.
  • Local Associations: You can check with your local builder’s association to see who they recommend in your area.
  • Check out trade magazines as most often reputable companies will invest highly in their advertising. Especially if they are an established company.
  • Visit some of the largest building supply stores in your area to see if they can make any recommendations.

The Screening Process

Once you have narrowed down your list of potential builders that you want to use, you should ask several questions, such as:

  • Will they provide you with an accurate quote that they will honour?
  • What associations do they belong to?
  • Will they provide you with a list of clients that they have performed work for in the past?
  • Do they look after all of the building permits?
  • Do they have insurance?
  • Are they able to commit to a time schedule?
  • Will they provide a written contract?

Make sure that you do get a contract and that you study it carefully. Make sure that everything that they verbally stated they will do is in the agreement in writing, and that it is signed by someone in the company that has the authority to do so.
